The biggest check in the market this year may not come from a venture fund. It may come from a corporation. KPMG's Q3 Venture Pulse says corporate venture capital investment reached $532.8 billion in the first nine months of 2026 — already past the previous annual record — while global venture funding hit $170.9 billion in Q3 alone. KPMG's release does not break out corporate investors' own contributions from total round values; do not treat the corporate venture figure as dollars supplied directly by corporations.
In the United States, deal value reached $515.8 billion through September, already the highest total in PitchBook's dataset and roughly 44% above 2021's full-year record. But Q3 value fell roughly 40% from Q2 while an estimated 5,012 deals closed — the second-most of any quarter ever counted. The money is concentrating at the top, and the count is holding at the bottom. AI took 82.7% of US deal value through September 2026, but only 44.9% of Q3 deal count. More than half of the deals that closed were not AI companies.
Two rounds from the last two days show both ends. Future Secure AI raised $80 million in convertible notes at a $1.2 billion valuation — AI co-workers for large organizations, backed in part by Macquarie Asset Management. Lawster raised a 7 million SEK angel seed — subscription legal services powered by AI, founded by two operators with prior companies in the same world.
The lesson: know which money you are taking. A corporate check may bring a commercial relationship and strategic priorities, with trade-offs in timing or control. Angel backing can offer a different set of trade-offs. Neither guarantees a customer, autonomy or a particular check size; the terms matter. Judge your market by the deal count, not the dollar total — and arrive with proof either kind of investor can verify without taking your word for it.
