Expectations can cause some of the biggest disappointments in your life.
It doesn’t matter what you are expecting, actuality is unlikely to match expectations.
That’s because humans are notoriously bad at predicting things.
Over the last 65 years, I’ve disappointed a number of people and most of those disappointments were based on what people were expecting.
They were expecting one thing and they got …. well me!
It’s just a fact, we rarely get exactly what we expected.
I know my parents didn’t get exactly what they expected when I was born all of those years ago and surely not as we traveled the years together.
For better or worse, there’s one constant and that’s change.
Change means that we are constantly guessing at what we can expect.
And usually we are wrong.
A lot of disagreements are centered around what we expect. A person expects one thing out of a relationship or agreement and we always deliver something a little different.
I’m not a big fan of disagreement — the process.
I get it, that we disagree. My friends ALL disagree on one point or another.
I just like it when we celebrate what we agree on.
It’s a fault, I know. I know we disagree and debate is necessary to find the best options, but I still want the peace.
So when my friends disagree or I disagree with someone I have the thought in the back of my head …
I wish we hadn’t expected so much.
Don’t get me wrong. I want to set high goals and I want to get there.
But the truth is, the impact is never in getting the goal.
The impact is in the small kind things we do to get there.
Expecting nothing and then getting so much more than you ever imagined well …
That’s joy!
