The creation of art is hard, but I’m one hundred percent sure I can accomplish it from time to time.
I’ve completely re-booted my career countless times creating art in various forms.
- As a child I started singing. (because that’s what you did in my family.)
- At 16, I started writing original songs. (because if you write your own music, it’s harder for people to tell when you make mistakes.)
- At 17 years, with the help of a local art teacher I created my first (and only) charcoal drawing and was shocked to discover that it looked like a vase of flowers.
- In my twenties, I created a new vision of a pet store from an old tired dreary one and a recording studio from a deserted pool hall.
- In my thirties, I created software, a couple of music degrees, part of a book, part of a requiem and a family.
- In my forties, I created a chicken coup, pig pens and piles of firewood from 80 acres of oak forest and software that helped run Pepsi.
- In my fifties, I created the Impact Family. (Now that’s lasting art!)
- And in my sixties, I’m creating feature films and a legacy of hope.
My results vary.
Most things that I’ve created are not what most people would call art, except in the special moment that is the magic of creation.
Because art IS the creation of something from nothing.
Lasting art is an entirely different thing, because whether something lasts in the long term is not up to you.
It’s up to the people that you touch, because only they can keep it alive.
I’m convinced that I’ll be putting in the work and creating art until I die, but it’s up to you to keep it alive if it’s going to impact anyone beyond my lifetime.
