A friend asked for some advice. I thought that it was a good question and thought I’d share my response in case you might be feeling some of his feelings.
His comment was in response to a question about money and how much it takes to be rich.
==========
Hopefully, you are never done. I see you out there doing the good things that have a positive impact on the people around you every day. I personally love watching that happen.
Your personal impact is immense and immeasurable.
And yet you say, ” It just seems that whenever I get to the next level… money wise…. I still feel like I need more to be secure or “independent”. I also have this weird feeling like once I really am “done” I’m just going to die soon after and never really get to enjoy any of it.. “
When we feel an endless and constant quest to be secure and independent, it is likely a result of what we’ve been through so far and what we’ve seen happen to others.
It’s hard to feel free and secure in a completely insecure world where our freedoms seem to disappear in an instant.
Here’s the good news.
Feeling secure and independent is a choice.
You make the choice to feel insecure or to feel you don’t have freedom or you chose the opposite.
When you feel insecure remember what is constant.
What are the truths that remain even in the most uncertain times?
Life is full of uncertainty.
We only know that we have this moment, but when we dig deep into our souls we know there are some things that can never be taken away.
Think about those things.
Be secure in that truth.
When you feel you have no freedom or independence, remember the lives of people who have lived lives trapped in prisons and yet have soared to heights we can barely imagine.
Stephen Hawking could have chosen to feel trapped in his body, but he chose to explore the universe.
Viktor E. Frankl was trapped in prison but chose to search for meaning.
The stories are endless.
So why should you choose to be insecure or choose to be imprisoned by whatever comes your way?
That’s not to say that it’s easy.
As David Gerrold said, “Life is hard. Then you die. Then they throw dirt in your face. Then the worms eat you. Be grateful it happens in that order.”
What you are really asking about is fear.
We don’t want bad things to happen, and they surely will.
If you live, you will feel pain, you will feel sorrow, and no amount of money or insurance can protect you from that.
There’s more good news.
You can choose to feel life fully.
Pain passes and while we remember how painful it was, once it is gone, we forget what it actually felt like and only remember that we don’t want it to happen again.
Chose to rejoice well at this moment.
Don’t wait for tomorrow, because that isn’t promised.
Remember all of those times you thought you couldn’t get through the day?
Congratulations, every day so far you have.
Unbelievable, if you think about what you’ve been through, but absolutely true.
There will be a day when you will not get through the day.
Likely that day only happens once.
I know you are blessed with the faith that there is something beyond this life.
Faith, hope, and love are what get us through fear.
Take joy in that faith.
And if you are wrong and your faith is misplaced, you will still be completely free of earthly pain and have all of the money you will ever need.
How much money do you need to be rich, secure, and free?
None at all.
